Description:
The island of Voorne is just south of the town Rotterdam, and is one of the isles shaping the south-western parth of Holland. The island is a transition zone between city, see and land. It connects the urban area of Rotterdam with the rural province of Zeeland. It is a wonderful area of water, nature, history and harbors where you can both relax and exercise. On the first day we walk through the nature area Dunes of Voorne. This is a wonderful area of wet dunes with many rare plants and plenty of variation. The second day we visit the mudflats of the island, with plenty of birds, each season different ones, and we walk through an old estate Mildenburg. We’ll visit some special viewing platforms for birds and you may spot an osprey, spoonbill or cormorant here. In the estate we may spot some mammals like deer or foxes.

The island of Voorne is known for its unique coastal areas. The dunes area different here than all other dunes in Holland, and visitors come from all over. The dunes are characterised by the many small lakes. There’s rare plants and animals, and the landcape changes every few minutes. On top of this there are reedlands and mudflats which attract thousands of birds. In short, this is a unique area worth a visit.

Day 1 Arrival in Oostvoorne
Today you'll arrive in the town of Oostvoorne and your hospitable hotel. You can enjoy the nice terrace outside or have a swim in the indoor swimming pool. Also you may rent a bike to explore the surroundings or just enjoy a nice meal and a quiet evening.
The dunes of Oostvoorne
Day 2: Hike through the dunes (14 km)
Today a nice walk through the Dunes of Voorne awaits you. You’ll meander through this wonderful nature area all day. You’ll walk through the dunes, along lakes on winding paths. You may meet some Exmoor ponies or Galloway cows. After some 9 kilometers you’ll find the visitor centre for the area, where they explain lots of thinks about the area. You’ll pass some bunkers from the Atlantik Wall along the route and keep an eye open for rare birds and plants. After the walk you’ll arrive back at the hotel, where you may relax and enjoy the many facilities of the hotel.
Mudflats of Voorne
Day 3: Through the mudflats, through an estate and departure (14 km)
Today is a walk with plenty of variation, through sometimes very different nature than yesterday. From your hotel you enter the reedlands directly, on wide grass paths through all sorts of shrubbery with lots of different birds. You’ll pass a few viewing platforms with views on a lake to try and find birds. Then it's across a dam for a while after which you’ll cross over from the lake to the mudflats of Voorne. This is an area where the tides rule. Sometimes the water is close and sometimes its far away. That means there’s lots of food for birds like redshanks, spoonbills, oystercatchers and even ospreys. You’ll walk past the mudflats and then will arrive in the dunes of Voorne again for a short while. Through the dunes you’ll enter the Mildenburg estate. This is an old estate with very different nature. High trees, sometimes in straight lines. On exiting the estate you’re back at your hotel. Then it is time to slowly head home.
You may extend this trip with one or more extra nights in Oostvoorne to relax or to explore the area a little further.
