The island of Voorne is just south of the town Rotterdam, and is one of the isles shaping the south-western parth of Holland. The island is a transition zone between city, see and alnd. It connects the urban area of Rotterdam with the rural province of Zeeland. It is a wonderful area of water, nature, history and harbors where you can both relax and exercise. On the first day we walk through the nature area Dunes of Voorne. This is a wonderful area of wet dunes with many rare plants and plenty of variation. The second day we visit the mudflats of the island, with plenty of birds, each season different ones, and we walk through an old estate, Mildenburg. We’ll visit some special viewing platforms for birds and you may spot an Osrey, spoonbill or cormorant here. In the estate we may spot some mammals like deer or foxes. Both walks will be guided by Hike in Holland and you will be provided with information on what you see during the walk.
The island of Voorne is known for its unique coastal areas. The dunes area different here than all other dunes in Holland, and visitors come from all over. The dunes are characterised by the many small lakes. There’s rare plants and animals, and the landcape changes every few minutes. On top of this there are reedlands and mudflats which attract thousands of birds. In short, this is a unique area worth a visit.

Day 2 Dunes of Voorne (14 km)
Today we explore the unique nature of the Island. We'll walk through the extensive dunes all day. We'll meet some people, but the area is large enough to be enjoy the tranquility. We may also meet some Exmoor ponies or Galloway cows, who walk around to make sure the area is not overgrown and the dunes may still drift. In and around the many small lakes one can find many amphibians and rare insects. The nutrient-poor soil and the variation in dry and wet areas deliver an ever changing vegetation. We'll enjoy a lunch in a nice restaurant near the visitor center, and will deliver you back at the hotel, where you can relax and enjoy a lovely three course diner.
The mudflats of Voorne
Day 3 Mudflats, an estate (14 km) and the journey home
The second day takes us immediately into the reedlands near the hotel. We'll have a look at some viewing platforms to see whether we can spot some rare birds, and then we'll head in the direction of the mudflats. This area is part of a larger sea reserve which spans the coast of two provinces, South-Holland and Sealand. Due to the natural development of this area many rare plants have developed here, like sea asters, salt marsh grass, herbaceous seepweed, salt sand-spurry and many others. There's many small animals in the mud which are an important source of nutrition for birds like the oystercatcher, the curlew, and redshanks. After the mudflats and lunch in a lovely restaurant, we'll pass through the dunes for a bit after which we'll visit the Mildenburg Estate. The landscape is much different here, due to the change in soil. In this estate are many small deer, and a variation of stately lanes and small paths, with many large old trees. We may even see some bats int he estate. We exit the estate just a few meters from the hotel, where you may have a drink and then slowly head home.
You may extend this trip with one or more extra nights in Oostvoorne to relax or to explore the area a little further.
