Description:
In these two days you will walk from Katwijk to Scheveningen along the beach. You will enjoy the beautiful clouds and the beach critters playing with the waves on the shoreline. You will walk back to Katwijk through the magnificent dunes on the second day. You might even encounter the rare spoonbill. In the rare occasion that the hotel in Scheveningen is fully booked at the time of your trip it is possible to switch around the two days so that your stay in a hotel in Katwijk instead of in Scheveningen. Depending on the winds you can also decide to walk through the dunes the first day, and on the beach the second day.

One day you walk along the beach enjoying the sounds of the sea: the waves and seagulls. And you’ll have a chance to look at the typical Dutch skies. The other day you walk through the dunes in various stages of development: young and old ones. You’ll sleep in the seaside town of Scheveningen, with easy access to the old town of the Hague.

Day 1 Katwijk – Scheveningen (13 km)
The route will take you across the beach from Katwijk to Scheveningen on this day. On one side you will have the sea and on the other side the large dunes, which protect Holland from floods. You will be guided by the sound of the waves and the shrieking of the seagulls. Beach critters play with the waves to find their food, which is a marvelous sight to watch. The coastal town of Scheveningen is a nice mixture between an old fishing village (if you walk a little bit further, you can visit the harbor and the old town), and a modern seaside resort, with everything the modern tourist needs. If you don't need anything, you can of course relax and enjoy the beach, or have a drink on one of the terraces on the boulevard. You will be staying in a comfortable family hotel.

Day 2 Scheveningen – Katwijk (17 km)
You will walk back to Katwijk through a very diverse area of dunes. This area is on Holland’s list of natural heritage. This landscape has a specific structure: parallel rows of dunes with various high dunes and lower swampy areas with more vegetation, which contain large valleys such as the Kijfhoek, Bierlap en Meijendel. These are dune fields which mainly consist of woodland now; the area has various developed types of forest. Locally there are several areas with diverse dune vegetation, such as in the Dragonfly valley. There is a well developed calcium-rich area of dune grassland in Berkheide, mainly close to Katwijk. This area grew by the centuries of human exploitation of the “sea village landscape”.
This trip can be easily extended. Scheveningen is a beach resort where you can do just about anything you want to do on the beach, like surfing, swimming, or just relaxing. You can also easily visit the town of the Hague from here. Katwijk is a bit more quiet, but if the wheather is nice, beach life is just as abundant here. Also you might rent a bycicle to see some more of this part of Holland. Do not hesitate to contact us if you’ve got any questions on extending your trip.
